16 soldiers arrested, to face trial over alleged misconduct

At least sixteen soldiers have been taken into custody over accusations linked to indiscipline and violations of military service rules.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, who explained that the arrests form part of routine measures aimed at sustaining discipline and order in the Armed Forces.

Gusau noted that preliminary findings indicated that most of the detained soldiers had expressed dissatisfaction, largely due to frustrations over stalled career progression, including repeated failures in promotion examinations and other related concerns.

According to him, “Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial.
Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.”

He further explained that those found culpable after investigations would face the full weight of military justice.

“Upon completion of investigation indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” he said.

Reiterating that the move was a disciplinary step, Gusau maintained that it was designed to strengthen order, loyalty, and cohesion within the system. He added,

“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority.”

He assured that the Nigerian military remains committed to its constitutional obligations and will continue to uphold professionalism at all times.
