A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has said the South West will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 if his government continues on its present course.
Olawepo-Hashim argued that the region cannot be expected to reward what he described as “failure in governance” with another mandate.
Speaking through the South West Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement (GHSM), Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, in Ilorin, he said: “The South West will not back President Tinubu in 2027 if his administration does not change direction. Our people cannot be asked to reward failure with another term.”
Olaniyi was reacting to a recent appeal by political commentator Reno Omokri, who urged both the North and South West to rally behind Tinubu for a second term.
Omokri had compared his call to the North’s support for former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 despite criticism of his performance, insisting that Tinubu has recorded some achievements in GDP growth and infrastructure.
But Olaniyi dismissed Omokri’s position as political manipulation.
“Calls like that ignore the realities Nigerians are facing today. They are playing on regional sentiments instead of addressing competence and results,” he said.
He added that Nigerians, especially in the South West, will decide based on performance and not sentiments in 2027.
