ASUU holds peaceful protest in Kano, blames gov’t for alleged breach of MoU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) branch, on Tuesday held a peaceful protest against the Federal Government for failing to implement a renegotiated agreement and clear unpaid salaries.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, the branch vice chairman, Yusuf Madugu, said the protest became necessary because the government has refused to act on the renegotiated 2009 agreement.

He noted that the agreement was reached in December 2024 under Malam Yayale Ahmed’s committee.

He explained that ASUU’s demands include the signing of the new agreement, payment of three and a half months’ withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, release of revitalisation funds, review of salaries and allowances, as well as more autonomy for universities.

Madugu also reminded the government that since the Goodluck Jonathan administration approved a N200 billion revitalisation fund to be paid in six tranches, only one tranche has been released.

According to him, the money is critical for upgrading laboratories, libraries, classrooms, and other learning facilities.

He warned that the government would be held responsible for any fallout if the issues remain unresolved, adding that ASUU will decide its next line of action at a national emergency congress.

The president of the BUK Students Union Government, Abdullahi Usman-Baba, also appealed to the government to dialogue with ASUU, stressing that students suffer the most whenever strikes happen.

“When there is a strike, it is the students that suffer most because our academic calendar is disrupted,” he said.
