The Lagos State Government has condemned in strong terms the recent assault on Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIOs, at Mile 2, vowing that those behind the attack will be brought to justice.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement issued on Thursday, described the incident as “grievous, appalling, and utterly unacceptable,” insisting it would not go unpunished.
“We received with profound indignation reports of the vicious assault on our VIO officers while performing their lawful duties. This attack is not only a direct affront to the affected officers but also a challenge to the authority and dignity of the Lagos State Government. It will never go unpunished,” Osiyemi declared.
The commissioner emphasized that VIO personnel are legally mandated agents of the state, entrusted with ensuring road safety and protecting lives. He warned that any attempt to intimidate or obstruct them was an attack on the rule of law and public order.
“The perpetrators of this disgraceful incident will be relentlessly tracked, apprehended, and made to face the full weight of the law,” he said.
Osiyemi also disclosed that the injured officers are responding to medical treatment, but stressed that the gravity of the attack remains undiminished. He assured the officers of the government’s full support and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding its personnel from criminal intimidation.
“The government stands firmly with the injured officers and will continue to guarantee the safety and dignity of all our personnel as they discharge their lawful duties,” he added.
