Eyewitnesses say the operation began early in the morning. Bulldozers (caterpillars) were used to flatten several shops, while policemen fired shots into the air to scare people away. Resistance from traders led to clashes, and many suffered injuries in the fracas.
Why It Happened
The action seems linked to earlier demolitions that took place in March 2025, when over 500 shops were demolished in the same market. Traders had filed a petition with the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Governor’s office, but no significant intervention had been made by then.
On 2 June 2025, the Ikeja High Court issued an order (injunction) directing that the status quo be maintained — meaning that no further demolitions or forceful removals should happen until further notice.
