The crisis rocking the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, deepened on Tuesday following the resignation of its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr Leye Igbabo.
Igbabo’s decision to quit came barely 72 hours after the party elected Mrs Dupe Aisida as its new state chairman, alongside other executive members, at a congress held in Akure, the state capital.
In his resignation letter addressed to the PDP secretariat in Akure, the former publicity director cited what he described as a “hostile and unfriendly environment” as the reason for his exit.
He also accused party leaders of “utter deceit, compromise, indiscipline, and lack of sincerity of purpose,” stressing that such circumstances made it impossible for him to discharge his duties effectively.
“It is disheartening to note that the secretariat has become hostile to me, affecting the efficiency of my responsibilities as Director of Media and Publicity,” Igbabo wrote.
“I have observed with pain the utter deceit, huge compromise, and lack of discipline within the system. Remaining in such an unproductive environment amounts to a waste of my time and energy. I therefore resign my appointment with immediate effect.”
His resignation adds to the turbulence within the state PDP, which has in recent months witnessed a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Speculation has also intensified around the party’s governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, who has been absent from party activities, including last weekend’s congress.
His absence has fueled rumours that he may be preparing to defect to the APC ahead of the November 16 gubernatorial election.
