65th Independence: US praises Nigerians for unwavering determination

The United States on Wednesday praised the resilience of Nigerians as the West African nation and regional leader marked the 65th anniversary of its independence.

In a statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US government noted that Nigeria has stood as a beacon of resilience and leadership for more than six decades.

Rubio said America values the enduring partnership rooted in shared democratic principles, a growing commercial relationship, and a commitment to fostering peace and security.

“On this special occasion, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering determination of the Nigerian people,” the top diplomat said.

Rubio expressed America’s commitment to continue to deepen collaboration in the years ahead as the United States and Nigeria collaborate to achieve common goals.

Concluding his message, the Secretary of State congratulated Nigerians on the “milestone anniversary” and wished the most populous black country continued progress and prosperity.

Nigeria is America’s second-largest trading partner in Africa. Both countries signed a Trade & Investment Framework Agreement, TIFA, in 2000, although the 8th and last TIFA Council Meeting was held in March 2014.

According to the Office of the Trade Representative, United States goods and services trade with Nigeria reached $13.0 billion in 2024, up 16.5 per cent ($1.8 billion) from 2023.

Goods trade with Nigeria was nearly $10 billion in 2024; trade exports to Nigeria in 2024 were $4.3 billion, up 66.5 per cent from 2023, while imports from Nigeria in the same year reached $5.7 billion, up 0.9 per cent from 2023.

Services trade with Nigeria was $3 billion in 2024; services exports to Nigeria in 2024 were $2.3 billion, up 5.9 per cent from 2023. The trade surplus with Nigeria was $1.7 billion in the same year, up 12.2 per cent over 2023.

America and Nigeria also cooperate on the tech ecosystem, entrepreneurship, financial fraud, transnational crime, and maritime security, including the annual Obangame Express sponsored by the U.S. Africa Command.

The exercise targets piracy, illegal arms, and narcotics trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea. Personnel from the U.S. Navy, Nigerian Navy, other African nations, and European partners participated in the 2025 edition hosted by Cabo Verde.
