12 killed, 5 injured in Kano road crash

Twelve people have died and five others injured in a lone road crash that happened in the early hours of Friday at Samawa Village in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command said the accident occurred along the Zaria–Kano highway around 2:40am and involved a DAF Trailer (CF95 model) with registration number KMC 931 ZE.

The vehicle was carrying both goods — including Ajinomoto spices — and passengers.

According to the FRSC spokesman, CRC Abdullahi Labaran investigations showed the crash was caused by a mechanical fault when the trailer’s cab hook broke, detaching the cab from the trailer body and leading to a loss of control.

Of the 19 people involved in the accident, 12 died on the spot, five sustained injuries, and two escaped unhurt. The bodies have been taken to Nassarawa Hospital, while the injured are receiving treatment at Kura General Hospital.

The Sector Commander, CC MB Bature, who visited the scene, described the tragedy as avoidable.

He warned drivers against overloading vehicles with goods, animals, and passengers, and stressed the need to obey traffic rules or risk tougher sanctions.

On behalf of the Corps Marshal and the entire FRSC, Bature condoled with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
