Trump, Putin talks: European leaders reaffirm commitment to Ukraine

European leaders have pledged to stand firmly behind Ukraine and sustain pressure on Russia, following United States President Donald Trump’s high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

In a joint declaration, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated their “unwavering” support for Kyiv.

The statement came after Trump briefed the leaders were briefed on his discussions with Putin, which produced no breakthrough on an immediate ceasefire but raised prospects of a potential peace agreement.

“Europe will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine,” the leaders said, pointing out that sanctions on Russia and military aid to Kyiv remain central to their strategy until Moscow halts its aggression.
