Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol, has slammed the club’s new signing, Florian Wirtz following the German’s Premier League debut on Friday.
He said the former Bayer Leverkusen star was floating and doing everything wrong during the Reds’ 4-2 win against Bournemouth.
He wondered if errors such as passing the ball to the opponents were what the attacking midfielder was brought to Liverpool to do in a record £116 million.
Ahead of the game on Friday, expectations were massive from the Germany International but it appears some of the Reds fans were disappointed.
Nicol was far from impressed with what he saw from the 22-year-old’s against the Cherries, concluding that it would take time for Liverpool to form very well this season.
Nicol told ESPN FC, “When is Wirtz going to start doing what he was brought in to do?
“I thought he was pretty average to be honest. He passed the ball to a blue jersey more than he did to a red jersey. Most things he did, it was not convincing.
“There was no real pace about him. He was kind of floating around like he wasn’t sure where he should be to get the ball.”
Wirtz covered the most distance (11.3 km) by any player in the game, making 69 touches and completing 37 of his 48 attempted passes with 77% accuracy.
