The Yoruba Council Worldwide, YCW, has appealed for peace and unity following the recent rift between two foremost Yoruba monarchs, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
In a statement issued by Charles Adeyemi, its Publicity Secretary on Wednesday, the council described the development as deeply concerning and noted that the two traditional rulers were revered custodians of Yoruba culture, dignity, and heritage.
“Moments like this demand calm, reflection, and unity rather than division. We are calling on respected Yoruba elders, statesmen, and cultural custodians to mediate constructively and bring about a lasting peace that honours the dignity of both royal stools,” the statement said.
The group further urged Yoruba sons and daughters, particularly those active on social media, to exercise restraint in their commentary.
“Let us refrain from speaking ill of our monarchs. Instead, let us be advocates of peace, understanding, and reconciliation,” YCW added.
The council stressed that the Alaafin and the Ooni were eternal symbols of Yoruba civilisation whose unity was essential for cultural preservation and the collective dignity of the Yoruba nation before the global community.
“We call for a truce, apology and immediate retraction of the 48 hours ultimatum issued by Bode Durojaiye, spokesman to the Alaafin of Oyo and also urge the prompt convocation of the Yoruba Obas Conference to pave the way for a peace pact in Yorubaland,” it added.
The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the council under its Global President, Aare Barrister Oladotun Hassan, to dialogue and reconciliation.
“We believe that through respect, patience, and wisdom, this matter can be resolved peacefully to the glory of our forebears and the benefit of generations to come,” Adeyemi said.
