The appeal court sitting at the Audu Bako Secretariat in Kano has reserved judgment in the appeal filed by Abdulmalik Tanko and Hashim Isiyaku, challenging the death sentence passed on them by the Kano State High Court.
The appellants are seeking the nullification of the lower court’s verdict, which sentenced them to death by hanging, and are praying the appellate court to acquit and discharge them of all charges.
Their counsel, Barrister Attorney Eze Wike, urged the court to set aside the conviction, arguing that it was not supported by credible evidence.
However, counsel to the Kano State Government, Barrister Lamido Abba Sorondinki, opposed the appeal and asked the court to uphold the death sentence handed down by the trial court.
The three-member panel, comprising Justice Moses Ugo, Justice O. O. Goodluck, and Justice A. R. Mohammed, stated that the date for the judgment would be communicated in due course.
It will be recalled that in 2022, the Kano State High Court No. 5 found Abdulmalik Tanko and Hashim Isiyaku guilty of kidnapping and murder of 5-year-old Hanifa Abubakar, and sentenced them to death by hanging.
