Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has lauded the incumbent president of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat in the just concluded presidential election.
DAILY POST earlier reported that Chakwera on Wednesday, announced that he had called Professor Peter Mutharika, his opponent, who won the nation’s presidential election to congratulate him.
Chakwera conceded defeat even before the election authority announced the finally results.
Reacting, Jonathan in a statement on his Facebook page, hailed the incumbent president “for his sportsmanship”.
He also congratulated the President-elect, describing the election as peaceful and a beacon of hope for other African countries.
“As Africans, our democracy endures when those we choose lead with integrity, humility, and respect for institutional processes.
“May this moment in Malawi inspire other nations to uphold the sanctity of the vote, to accept outcomes gracefully, and to always put the interests of the people above political ambition.
“Malawi’s example today is a beacon of hope and a lesson in democratic maturity for all of us”, he added.
