The Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Eko DisCo, has urged residents of Ibeju-Lekki and surrounding communities to exercise extreme caution around electrical installations, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
The company issued the advisory on Friday during a customer engagement forum in the Ibeju district.
The session was attended by community leaders, business owners, and representatives of local associations. The Acting Chief Executive Officer of Eko DisCo, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, was represented by the company’s Chief Finance Officer, Mr Joseph Esenwa.
According to Esenwa, the appeal has become necessary due to increasing safety concerns in the area, particularly issues linked to illegal electrical connections, vandalism, and unsafe construction activities around power infrastructure.
“We will encourage everyone, please do not build under power lines for safety reasons. There are standard regulations on distances from high-tension lines that must be strictly followed before construction,” he stressed.
He also cautioned against erecting structures near or on underground cables, warning that such practices expose residents to grave risks of electrocution and also undermine service delivery.
Esenwa noted that vandalism of Eko DisCo’s equipment and unauthorised tampering with electrical systems had worsened power supply challenges in Ibeju-Lekki, urging residents to work with the company to curb such practices.
To mitigate risks during the rainy season, he disclosed that the company has stepped up maintenance schedules for cables and poles, improved monitoring of installations, and introduced faster response systems for fault reporting.
He appealed to customers to promptly report any damaged or faulty electrical facilities to the nearest Eko DisCo office for immediate attention.
