Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has reacted to manager Ruben Amorim’s comments on Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes.
Amorim had recently suggested after Man United’s Premier League 1-1 draw with Fulham at that weekend that Mainoo has to battle with Fernandes for a starting spot in his squad.
Mainoo is yet to play for the Red Devils in the Premier League this season after he was made to sit on the bench through out the duration of their matches against Arsenal and Fulham.
The 20-year-old is behind the likes of Fernandes, Casemiro, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte in Amorim’s pecking order of midfielders.
Speaking on Amorim’s comments and Mainoo’s situation on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the retired England footballer insisted that Mainoo is fighting a losing battle competing with the club’s captain for a starting spot.
“If Mainoo has to dislodge the captain [to get into Man United’s starting XI like Amorim stated], he is fighting a losing battle, is not he? Bruno Fernandes has been the talisman for this team for the last three or four years,” Ferdinand said.
“How is Mainoo going to displace someone like him? It’s going to be nearly impossible. Bruno is the guy they look to when they need a goal, when they need a moment, when they want a chance.”
