India, Brazil to participate as BWF, BCA approve international Para-Badminton in Abia

Two hundred and twenty-four players from about 20 countries, including India, Brazil, Peru and Rwanda will compete in First Abia Para-Badminton International championship from 30th September to 5th October, 2025 in Umuahia.

Also, All-African Para-badminton Championship will hold from 6th to 12th October, 2025 in the Abia state capital, as approved by the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Confederation of Africa.

Unveiling the  championships on Tuesday, Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechuckwu Emetu said that the double events marked a defining moment in the state’s sports history.

The Deputy Governor, who is also the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee for the Abia Para Badminton Championships, 2025 said that Abia had unwavering respect for athletes of all abilities.

Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development,  Nwaobilor Ananaba, said that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to protect  national and international players and their officials from  the airports to their hotels and the venue of events.

Ananaba noted that Governor Alex Otti had secured the State, purchased  a specialised mobility bus for Abia Para-athletes, released funds and procured para-badminton maintenance equipment.

Contributing, the National President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr Francis Orbih, confirmed that the championship had been approved by relevant international federations.

Meanwhile, India and Nigeria will parade 58 and 54 players respectively, the highest numbers in the championships.
