is not dumping ground – Commissioner rejects repatriation from Abuja

The Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children, and Disabled, Amina S Abdullahi, has expressed serious concern over the continuous repatriation of people into Kano from Abuja without proper coordination, documentation, or handover procedures.

She described the practice as dehumanising, unacceptable, and a violation of the dignity and rights of those affected.

This is contained in a statement signed by Bintu Nuhu Yakasai Director, Public Enlightenment Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Disabled.

The Commissioner stressed that while Kano is a hospitable and accommodating state, it will not tolerate the indiscriminate dumping of people—whether indigenes or non-indigenes—without following due process.

“Every Nigerian has the right to live in any state in Nigeria, why should Kano people be denied that freedom?” she asked in dismay.

She also pointed out that some of those being repatriated are traders, not beggars, and warned that Kano’s accommodating nature should not be taken advantage of.

“Here in Kano, we accommodate everyone, why should we be denied our rights?” she added.

The Commissioner called on the authorities in Abuja to stop this practice immediately, insisting that any repatriation must be carried out lawfully, in a coordinated and dignified manner.

“Kano State is not a dumping ground,” she emphasised. “We will not serve as a final destination for abandoned persons.”

She further explained that the Ministry will engage with relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Government, to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Commissioner Amina Abdullahi reaffirmed Kano State’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all people, while also preserving the state’s integrity and capacity to manage its own affairs.
