Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Okonkwo explained that Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, understands that without such a promise, he risks losing northern votes ahead of the 2027 elections.
> “It was even Atiku Abubakar that first said he would do one term. Peter Obi keyed into it because he knows that if he, as a younger person, does not make that promise, he will lose the entire North,” Okonkwo said.
According to him, any serious opposition party hoping to unseat an incumbent must adopt a one-term agreement to assure both northern and southern blocs that no region would feel shortchanged.
> “It’s purely a political strategy to say, ‘Look, I won’t cut the eight years, I won’t shortchange you. If elected, I’ll do only four years to complete the South’s turn,’” he added.
