How It Unfolded
The travelers were en route from Port Harcourt to Kano to celebrate the Sallah festivities when they were intercepted by local vigilantes and Edo State Security Corps personnel.
Misidentification of their hunting rifles (Dane guns)—common in the North—led locals to mistake them for kidnappers. Instead of alerting law enforcement, a false alarm led to panic and bloodshed.
A mob descended, setting their vehicle ablaze with some victims trapped inside. Others were dragged out, placed in wheelbarrows, and burned alive.
Survivors were few, and those rescued were rushed to His Grace Hospital in Uromi.
