North-East govs reaffirm commitment to regional development

Governors from the six states of Nigeria’s North-East geopolitical zone have renewed their collective commitment to addressing the region’s most pressing issues, including security, economic development, and climate change.

The North-East Governors’ Forum NEGF, which consist governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States, made the pledge on Saturday, shortly after their 12th meeting in Jalingo.

In a communique issued after the meeting, they commended the progress made in combating insurgency in the region, particularly the gains achieved in recent years in countering Boko Haram.

However, they expressed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crises and infrastructural deficits that continue to affect displaced populations and hinder recovery efforts in the North-East.

Despite improved security, the region continues to face significant challenges, including a lack of adequate infrastructure and widespread displacement due to years of insurgency.

A major point of discussion during the meeting was the increasing threat posed by climate change, particularly the risk of flooding in the region.

Citing reports from credible agencies forecasting significant climate impacts, the Governors called for immediate, proactive measures to address the potential flooding risks.

The Forum urged the Federal Government and the North East Development Commission, NEDC, to prioritize the rebuilding of vital infrastructure, such as bridges, that have been damaged by flooding.

The Governors also emphasized the need for greater awareness and preparedness among communities living along flood-prone areas.

The rising cost of agricultural inputs emerged as another critical issue discussed by the Forum, as they warned that unless addressed, the escalating costs could severely affect food production in the coming year, potentially leading to a food crisis in the region.

In an effort to strengthen economic cooperation, the Forum announced plans to host the North-East Trade Fair in Maiduguri, Borno State, in December 2025.

The fair, in collaboration with the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECCIMA, according to them, will go a long way in promoting regional trade and highlight the economic potential of the North-East.

Also addressing energy poverty, the governors reiterated their commitment to exploring solar power as a sustainable, cost effective energy solution.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve the region’s energy infrastructure, they announced plans to develop an integrated subregional power master plan, to be spearheaded by the Committee on Power and Energy.

The communique, signed by the governor of Borno State, also emphasized that the challenges facing the North-East require continued unity and collaboration among the region’s six states.

The governors reiterated their commitment to working together to improve the socio-economic conditions of the subregion.
