Osun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the violent clash between operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, and residents of Akinlalu community.
This announcement was contained in a statement by the Osun State Police Commissioner, CP Ibrahim Gotan and made available by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi on Wednesday.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that the clown on Akinlalu town, Ife North local government area of the state reportedly led to the deaths of three people and injuries to several others.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at about 1:20 p.m., when Amotekun operatives allegedly invaded the Akinlalu community with two official patrol vehicles and one private car.
According to the statement, the information received by the police from Chief Oyebamiji Kamorudeen of Akinlalu indicated that the invasion was reportedly a retaliatory operation following the alleged snatching of two pump-action guns from Amotekun operatives by unidentified persons.
The statement reads, “During the operation, the security operatives were said to have fired several gunshots, resulting in bullet wounds to three residents identified as 22-year-old Adeagbo Kadijat, 60-year-old Oke-Ila Oyebamiji, and 19-year-old Fayomi Toheeb.
“It was further alleged that three persons — 26-year-old Ibrahim Oyebamiji, Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo — lost their lives during the incident. Their corpses were reportedly taken away by the Amotekun operatives.
“Police officers from the Osun State Command were said to have swiftly mobilised to the area, where they recovered thirteen expended cartridges and evacuated the injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment.”
The police intervention was said to have calmed rising tension in the community, as angry residents were persuaded not to engage in reprisals or take laws into their own hands.
However, in a separate account, the Amotekun Corps claimed that its men were first ambushed by armed hoodlums while responding to a distress call from residents of Akinlalu.
The Corps explained that during the ambush, “two of its service rifles were allegedly seized by the attackers.”
According to the Corps’ version of events, “reinforcement teams sent to the area came under heavy gunfire at a barricaded junction, resulting in an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted over an hour.”
Amotekun stated that three suspected attackers were killed during the confrontation, several arrests were made, and the stolen firearms were later recovered from a hideout.
In response to the conflicting accounts, the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, ordered that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Osogbo for a thorough and discreet investigation.
“All allegations, including murder, assault occasioning harm, gun snatching, and wounding, would be objectively investigated to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.
“The Command urges residents of Akinlalu and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding. Tactical teams have been deployed to maintain peace and prevent any further breakdown of law and order,” he said.
The Osun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the protection of lives and property, urging members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
