Police arrest man with illegal firearm in Taraba

Operatives of the Taraba State Police Command have arrested a 31-year-old man in possession of an illegal firearm.

The arrest, as announced by the command via a statement signed by the spokesman of the command, James Lashen, took place during a routine stop-and-search operation in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area.

“The suspect, identified as Gali Yunana, was apprehended at about 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, in the Munga Lelau area by a team of Mobile Police officers from the 40 PMF Jalingo, led by ASP Bitrus Benson,” police said .

Yunana who resides in Munga Doso village was said to have been found with a British Beretta pistol.

“The weapon’s breach number had been deliberately erased. Two live rounds of ammunition were also recovered”, the statement added.

During interrogation, the suspect was reported o have also confessed that the pistol previously belonged to his late brother, Odoji Yunana.

The police announced that the case is currently under active investigation.

Elated by the development, the Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, commended the officers involved for their vigilance and reaffirmed the command’s determination to rid Taraba State of illegal arms and criminal elements.

“This arrest is a direct result of the Command’s ongoing security review in Karim-Lamido. We will continue to intensify our efforts to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” she said.

The police have urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
