The story was made public by Nigerian property lawyer @theomonilelawyer, who shared details of the scam on TikTok. According to him, the tenant had lived in the property for seven years before orchestrating the fraudulent deal.

How the Fraud Was Carried Out

The tenant reportedly forged several documents — including a deed of assignment, survey plan, and receipts allegedly signed by the Okota family — to convince an unsuspecting buyer that the duplex was genuinely for sale.

After collecting the ₦83 million payment, the tenant even requested a four-month grace period to “relocate,” claiming he needed time to move out.

How the Scam Was Discovered

The fraud came to light when an agent noticed irregularities. While the buyer was assured the house was vacant, official records showed it was actually under tenancy.

The real owner, who had been abroad, has since returned to Nigeria. The case is now under active police investigation.

Lawyer’s Warning to Nigerians

The property lawyer who exposed the scam warned buyers against rushing into real estate transactions without due diligence.
