Rivers govt takes over prosecution of two men accused of killing siblings

The Rivers State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, has taken over the prosecution of two men accused of killing two children.

Aniekan Sunday and his native doctor, Kingsley Opurum, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and the murder of two minors, who were siblings, around Rukpukwu community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

According to count one of the charges, the duo, on March 22, 2025, conspired among themselves to murder their victims.

Sunday, the prime suspect, allegedly used a kitchen knife to slaughter the minors and extract their blood, as directed by his native doctor, Opurum, who purportedly planned to use the blood for money rituals.

When the matter came up in court on Tuesday, the trial judge, Justice Rita Oguguo, after the Chief Principal Counsel from the Ministry of Justice, Precious Ordu, announced his appearance, declined to have the charge read or a plea taken due to the absence of defence counsel.

Justice Oguguo ordered that the accused persons be remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till October 16, 2025, for plea and possible commencement of trial.
