At least seven people, including children were killed and eight others injured in an overnight attack on Angwan Rimi community in Kamaru ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to community sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred late Sunday when suspected armed herders stormed the village, unleashing violence on residents. Victims included children as young as one year old.
Those confirmed dead were identified as Jacob Zaka, 12; Felicia Francis, 30; Magret Mathias, 5; Veronica Paul, 25; Delight Paul, 1; Confidence Yakubu, 15; and Sati Markus, 9.
The injured were named as Mathew Sunday, 14; Jethro Istafanus, 7; Jackson Istafanus, 5; Emmanuel Morris, 14; Agatha Sylvester, 9; Joy Markus, 9; Devine Paul, 6 months; and Mary Ishaya, 12. They are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.
Residents condemned the killings as “wicked and inhuman,” urging security agencies to act swiftly to safeguard vulnerable communities.
“We sympathize with the families that lost their loved ones and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. We call on the Federal Government, Kaduna State Government, and Kauru Local Government to intervene to protect lives and property,” a representative of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Kamaru Branch, said.
The association also appealed to locals to remain calm during the mourning period, assuring them that security operatives had been notified.
Recall that on August 16, an analysis warned of renewed banditry in Kaduna following the assassination of Musa Kachallah, a repentant bandit leader who had renounced crime. His killing is believed to have triggered retaliatory attacks by bandit groups dissatisfied with the state’s amnesty program, which they view as insincere and poorly coordinated.
Despite the rising tension, the Kaduna State Government has yet to issue a statement. Security experts advise heightened surveillance across frontline LGAs, particularly Chikun, Kauru, Giwa, Makarfi along the Zaria–Kano highway, and Kajuru.
