Writing on his official X handle on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Sani described the act as “sad and unfortunate,” stressing that it reflects the dangerous normalization of criminality in northern communities.
The meeting was reportedly convened between community leaders and armed bandits after recent attacks, including a deadly assault on a mosque that left several worshippers dead.
Sani warned that treating criminals like celebrities undermines the sacrifices of security agencies, emboldens perpetrators, and disregards the suffering of victims.
> “This kind of behavior sends the wrong message,” he cautioned, insisting that dialogue must not become a spectacle at the expense of justice.
His comments sparked heated debate online. While many social media users agreed that the selfies were insensitive, others argued the images might have been desperate attempts by residents to secure peace in a volatile region.
Despite ongoing military campaigns, banditry continues to plague Katsina and other North-West states, displacing thousands of families and worsening insecurity.
