British rapper Skepta has called for increased recognition for UK rappers, emphasizing that they are often underrated in the global hip-hop scene.
During a recent interview with Link UP TV, Skepta clarified that his challenge to American rappers to engage in a rap battle with UK artists was aimed at securing proper acknowledgment for Grime musicians. He made it clear that the intention was not to belittle US rappers.
“My challenge to US rappers was me saying it is time to get the respect we [UK rappers] deserve,” Skepta said. “It wasn’t from a place of we are going to annihilate them [US rappers] even though I feel that it is definitely possible. It is more of we want the respect.”
Meanwhile, Canadian rapper Drake contributed to the debate, siding with the UK rap scene. Speaking during his headlining performance at the Wireless Festival in London on Saturday, Drake boldly stated that the UK has the best rappers and that no artist from anywhere in the world could out-rap English MCs in a battle.
