Why Boko Haram remains prominent in Nigeria – Former NAF spokesman

Former Spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force and security consultant, Group Captain Sadiq Shehu (rtd), has said that Boko Haram remains prominent in Nigeria because successive governments, including the current one, do not take the fight seriously.

Shehu made this statement on Tuesday, while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television.

“The government doesn’t need to formally declare war for this. Declaring war has its own drawbacks.

“The army is better off fighting without declaring war; not declaring war is more flexible for the war fighter.

“When you declare war, you are putting some inconveniences for which they have to operate.

“If you declare war, it sends a bad signal for the country. The government should not declare war but act decisively,” he said.

When asked why it is so difficult for the authority to act, the retired Group Captain said, “There’s no honest discussion between the security agencies and the political masters.”
