Woman divorces husband for refusing to fix her damaged mobile phone

A woman, Zainab Alhassan, on Tuesday divorced her husband, Tijjani Muhammad, after he allegedly refused to repair her damaged phone worth N70,000.

Zainab told a Shari’a court that she was no longer interested in the marriage and wanted to end it through Khul’i—a form of divorce where a woman returns her dowry to her husband.

She said she was ready to refund the N30,000 dowry she received in order to regain her freedom.

Zainab explained that she was watching a movie on her phone when her husband got angry, snatched the phone from her, and smashed it. However, she admitted that she had no witness to support her claim.

In his response, Tijjani said he had no objection to the divorce but denied breaking his wife’s phone.

The presiding judge, Mu’awiyya Shehu, granted the divorce based on Khul’i and dismissed Zainab’s request for her husband to repair the phone.
